WELCOME

We are very happy to welcome you to the Dennis Gabor Applied University (DGAU). Based in Hungary, memberstate of the European Union, in the geographical centre of Europe we are inviting participation to our educational programmes from progressively farther afield. Since l992 we have been operating an increasingly successful programme of Information Technology oriented degree courses in the rapidly developing city of Budapest.

SOME WORDS ABOUT US

Dennis Gabor Applied University was established in 1992. It operates as a private Applied University accredited by the Hungarian government.
DGAU is one of the leading higher educational institutions in Hungary and Central-East Europe. Its more than 15 year experience in vocational training and Information Technology and its more than 5 year experience in the international training is the guarantee for the high quality education. Our diploma is recognised worldwide as being among the most up-to-date, living qualifications, necessary for a career in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
Our training is open and flexible. Full-time and correspondence faculties can be chosen only in Budapest, and the distance learning can be taken up elswhere by means of our ILIAS e-learning framework.

DGAU was one of the first institutions in Hungary to provide distance education. The institution is also one of pioneers in the introduction e-education methods.

MISSION

The mission of our Applied University is to provide high-quality educational training which satisfies the requirements of the labour market and meets the challenges of both Hungary and the world.

People who apply to our institution are devoted to the much sought-after fields of engineering and economics. They are keen to work in the theoretical and practical fields of economics, computing and information technology. Apart from up-to-date theoretical basics and practical courses, our students are instructed in fundamental professional areas as well. This way students can effectively prepare for a successful entry into the labour market and for gaining further degrees e.g. MSc/MA.

We have established a flexible framework for graduation, which allows for studying and working as well as providing for families simultaneously.

In the first 15 years of our Applied University, tens of thousands of students have started their information technology studies. More than 8,000 of those students have graduated and have begun work as successful professionals in various fields of computing.

FORMS AND METHODS OF EDUCATION

The forms of education are traditional education and distance education (blended-learning).

The network of consulting centres forms the basis for the distance training activities. The centre of the network is the capital, Budapest. However, students can also access training in some other cities in Hungary as well as in other countries.
Management consisting of distinguished representatives of the profession transmits the values of users, the society and economic life to decision-makers.

Dennis Gabor Applied University was one of the first institutions in Hungary to provide distance education. The Applied University is also one of the pioneers in the introduction of e-education methods.

The DGAU was the first to start applying distance education methodology in Hungary in 1992. At the beginning, our distance education system was based on the British model of the Open University, which broadcast educational programmes in a particular section of the BBC mainly in the evening. British students recorded the evening programmes on video cassettes. At Dennis Gabor Applied University, lectures were video recorded from the beginning, and were multiplied with the so-called candid camera technique. From the student instruction material package, students passed on the up-to-date paper-based and electronic teaching materials that closely followed the development of Information Technology knowledge to peer students of other institutions as well. Our Applied University did not prevent the production of unauthorized copies: even today, we do not copyright our teaching materials, due to our belief in the freedom of knowledge.

Even after fifteen years innovation, we are continuously applying more and more modern methods and technologies in our work. Dennis Gabor Applied University's 50,000 students so far constitute a considerable base of experience and knowledge that we have accumulated. The continuous improvement of teaching materials is hugely aided by feedback from graduates and their employers.

Our institution is a member of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Students compose their individual curricula from the mandatory, recommended and elective subjects.

PROGRAMS OF STUDY AND DEGREE CERTIFICATES

Our training courses are open and flexible. Full-time and part-time programs can be chosen in Budapest only. Distance learning can be taken up not only in Budapest but also through our ILIAS e-learning system.

STUDENT SERVICES

Our student consulting service assists - apart from the up-to-date Internet materials, printed and electronic handouts - with independent learning by providing: a teaching manual, a student-friendly environment, modern infrastructure, a mentor system, and a student advisory service.

Personalized advice and support are well organised at the institution as part of the mentors' and tutors' network. Students have a personal mentor who monitors their progress and provides intensive assistance up to the successful final examination.

Research and training are closely interconnected at our Applied University. Research is required, primarily by having to keep up with information technology that develops constantly.

INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION

Our Applied University is a member and active participant of organisations and confederations of institutions of higher education. Ties with these bodies have been developed on the basis of personal participation or individual foreign scholarship contests.

The institution considers it important to develop and maintain international connections. To that end, our Applied University establishes permanent cooperation based on training and research programs with an increasing number of foreign higher education institutions. As part of the cooperation, our Applied University organizes student and teacher exchanges, granted study trips, mutual research and teaching projects and takes steps to arrange for graduates to do further courses. One of the most important aims of establishing, maintaining and developing these relationships is to facilitate the international integration of the new generation entering the world of work and enterprise.
Our institution has successfully taken part in the European Union program SOCRATES/ERASMUS since its introduction to Hungary.

At the DGAU, there is, primarily, a need for student and teacher mobility. The number of our incoming and outgoing students and teachers is gradually increasing every year. In order to promote mobility, we make efforts to achieve the complete acknowledgement of credits in Hungary of courses taken by our students abroad.

Also, we continuously increase the number of courses taught in English as well as in Hungarian, which is aimed to make our instittution more attractive for foreign, incoming students who are interested in visiting the Applied University.

CHALLENGES

Dennis Gabor Applied University stands out in Hungary and Central Europe as a higher education institution with the fastest growing number of distance education students. Our 8,000+ graduates, will be able to work in the many areas of information technology both in Hungary and around the world.

We believe in life-long learning. According to labour market trends, professionals must renew their knowledge 3 to 5 times in the field of information technology during their career.

„I recieved my diploma at DGAU. My present place of work is a stock company which employes 120 experts in information technology and has affiliated companies in Switzerland.
